TO THE SOUND SUITE STUDIO

This was a legendary independent recording studio in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Alvin Clark, British music producer, sound engineer and keyboardist and Peter Rackham, audio engineer (piano, keyboard), were the musician-owner of that legendary “Sound Suite Studio”, at 92 Camden Mews, London.

I used this famous "Sound Suite Studio" for the production of two songs. Colin Dudman arranged and played piano, while Peter Boita did the drums.

In 1978, the British post-punk band The Fall, among others, recorded their groundbreaking debut album, Live at the Witch Trials, there. Clark also worked as a sound engineer for the London punk/new wave band pragVEC on their EP Expert in 1978.
Career Milestones:

• The Fall (1978): Clark oversaw the recording sessions at Sound Suite Studio. The album was recorded in just one day in December 1978.
• The Damned (1979): He was at the controls as an engineer during the famous Machine Gun Etiquette sessions.

Around 1978, an early, detailed demo of "Video Killed the Radio Star" was recorded at "Sound Suite Studios", Camden, London, engineered by co-studio-owner Peter Rackham, served as the blueprint for the final record and helped the group, later known as “The Buggles”, get signed to Island Records.

However, the final commercial single (the one that became a massive hit and MTV's first video) was tracked and mixed elsewhere:
The instruments were recorded at "The Townhouse" in West London.

The vocals, overdubs, and final mix were completed at Sarm East in East London.

The Buggles, formed in 1977, first consisted of Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Woolley.

The 1978 demo version of "Video Killed the Radio Star" featured British pop singer Tina Charles on lead vocals.

Tina Charles is a British disco singer. She is best known for her 1976 song "I Love To Love."and "Dance Little Lady Dance". Her chosen stage name of Charles was a tribute to her father, Charles Hoskins.
Trevor Horn, co-writer and producer, briefly became Charles's boyfriend, and he studied the techniques of her producer, Biddu, who made Tina Charles number 1 single, I Love to Love (But My Baby, just wantes ...), in 1976.
Charles star power helped the band secure their record deal with Island Records.
For the famous 1979 single released by The Buggles, Trevor Horn took over as the male lead vocalist.
The original songwriter was Bruce Woolley.

A few years later, Tina Charles aka Tina Hoskins. Recorded a number of singles in 1969 backed by then unknown Elton John. In the very early 70's she was in the female pop trio Wild Honey as well as recorded a large number of anonymous lead vocals for the Top Of The Pops series.

  • Barbara Thompson?: Sax

"The Sound Suite Studio" was also heavily used by new wave and indie icons like Lene Lovich, Tuxedomoon, and The Monochrome Set.

The Monochrome Set (1980): Peter Rackham served as an engineer on their 1979 track "Boom Boom".

The Monochrome Set Apocalypso/Fiasco Bongo Dindisc, 2/10/1980 ...

For the album *Love Zombies*, Peter Rackham not only handled the engineering and co-production, but also contributed the keyboard parts.

Major pop hits (1980s): In the years that followed, he mixed and produced global hits at Sound Suite Studio, including the synth-pop classic “19” by Paul Hardcastle (1985) and “Free Nelson Mandela” by The Specials (1984).

He had also teamed up with lyricist Al Price to write a collection of quick fire pop/rock/ska nuggets that would be fine-tuned into the album 'Savage Music'.

Lene Lovich: Rackham contributed as a recording engineer on releases like No-Man's-Land.

Colin Dudman: A highly respected British jazz and session pianist / keyboardist. He has spent decades performing with top-tier jazz musicians, arranging, and contributing keyboard tracks to various pop, rock, and jazz fusion projects like Barbara Thompson.

During this era, it was common for top-tier session musicians like Ronnie Caryl and Colin Dudman to use indie hubs like the Camden Sound Suite to cut tracking demos, collaborate on solo projects, or record pieces of commercial pop records away from the more expensive corporate studios.

Leo Sayer and Colin Dudman produced music primarily at "Sound Suite Studio", located on 92 Camden Mews, Camden, London.

In 1986 Colin Dudman co-founded with Dill Katz his own famous recording and rehearsal studio called "The Premises Studios" in London's Hackney district.

Sayer began his musical career as the leader of the London-based Terraplane Blues Band in the late '60s. He formed Patches with drummer Dave Courtney in 1971.

The Core Connections:

Leo Sayer: The Grammy-winning British singer-songwriter who dominated charts in the 1970s. Both Ronnie Caryl and Colin Dudman crossed paths with Sayer's orbit as part of his live touring band backing or recording personnel during his peak eras.

For example, Dudman and Caryl both famously contributed to recordings for one another’s circles—such as Dudman playing keyboards on Ronnie Caryl's solo material (like his album Leave a Light On).

Peter Boita went on to have a highly successful career as a premier UK session musician, later serving as the resident drummer for the West End production of Les Misérables for 25 years! + he had a broader session career with artists like Elton John.

He was the drummer for the Les Humphries Singers

and worked with the popular European pop group primarily during 1975. While he originally contributed as a studio session musician, he also toured heavily with them.

Key facts about his time with the Band:

The Era: He played with the group during 1974 and 1975 when they were a major "European phenomenon," regularly filling stadiums across the continent.

Live Performances: He famously played drums during their live sets—including a BBC Television "In Concert" special—using a custom double bass drum setup.
Boita went on to have a highly successful career as a premier UK session musician, later serving as the resident drummer for the West End production of "Les Misérables" for 25 years.

Peter Boita's broader session career with artists like Elton John:
UK session drummer Peter Boita has not been a touring or recording member of the official Elton John Band, which has historically relied on mainstays like Nigel Olsson. However, Boita’s broader session career intersects with Elton's world through collaborative work with Elton John’s core collaborators, producers, and bassists.
Boita’s broader session credits and musical collaborations include:

• Sir George Martin: Boita worked as the session drummer on projects overseen by legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin, such as the Poetry in Motion album (setting Sir John Betjeman's poetry to music). This project brought together a roster of artists that heavily overlapped with Elton John’s era.
• Herbie Flowers: Boita formed a rhythm section with famed session bassist Herbie Flowers, who famously laid down the bass tracks for Elton John's early, defining albums like Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water.
• The Elton Story (BBC Radio): In 1976, during Elton John's meteoric rise, Boita performed alongside Elton (who was doing backing vocals) on cover versions for BBC Radio One's The Elton John Story.
• Other Legends: His extensive session resume includes backing A-list stars like Madonna, The Jacksons, Whitney Houston, Sir Rod Stewart, and The Supremes.

TO THE ALVIC STUDIOS

This was a legendary independent recording studio located on West London (Wimbledon/Barons Court), in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Alan James and Vic Sweeney were the musician-owner named by combining their first names (Alan and Vic), the studio originally opened in Wimbledon before later relocating to Kensington.
During the late 1970s and 1980s, the duo and their studio played a foundational role in the British pub rock, punk, and new wave movements.

Before building the studio, Vic Sweeney (drums) was an accomplished British drummer, most notably playing with the 1960s/1970s rock group The Alan Bown Set (later known simply as Alan Bown!) and George Bean and The Runners. Alan James (sometimes referred to in circles as Al James) was an established bassist. Together, their dual perspectives as active musicians and technical engineers gave Alvic Studios a reputation for being a highly collaborative, artist-friendly creative space.

Key Musical Contributions:

Dury and Jankel recorded demo tapes of many of the songs in April 1977, joined in the session by Nugent, at the Alvic Studio.

• Ian Dury's Breakthrough: In April 1977, Ian Dury and Chaz Jankel recorded the foundational demo tapes for the legendary album New Boots and Panties!! at Alvic Studios. While recording there, the studio's resident engineer informed Dury about a highly skilled session rhythm section—bassist Norman Watt-Roy and drummer Hugh "Charley" Charles—who were working extra gigs for cash. This crucial recommendation led to the formation of The Blockheads.
• Kevin Coyne: Both James and Sweeney were heavily involved with singer-songwriter Kevin Coyne. Alan James served as his bass player, while Vic Sweeney played drums in Coyne's band between 1978 and 1980. They co-produced, engineered, and performed on several of his projects, including records tracked at Alvic like Pointing the Finger (1981).
• Other Notable Artists: The studio became a hotspot for an eclectic mix of underground, indie, and alternative talent. Notable artists who tracked music at Alvic include:
• Nick Cave: (who recorded there in October 1983)
• Ben Watt: (prior to finding major success with Everything but the Girl)
• The Escalators

TO THE WOODCRAY MANOR FARM STUDIO

Who was this misteriös Farm Studio, and who was Nick the sound engineer, in the picture? In which studio did Ronny Caryl play drums and guitar for me? These were all questions I wanted to get answers to.

I had all kinds of information about the studios and sound engineers I worked with between 1976 and 1981—except for one studio that was about an hour west of London. It was a farm studio, and the sound engineer’s name was Nick; he’d come straight from working in the fields. So I went through my list of all the “farm studios” and “farm sound engineers” from that time. My farm studio and its sound engineer weren’t on the list, but I was very surprised at how many such farm studios and farm sound engineers there were back then:

• Hatch Farm Studios (Surrey)

Nick Smith ingenieer — affectionately known in the industry by humorous nicknames like Nick "Tornado" Smith or Nick "Slight Breeze" Smith — became a highly sought-after engineering talent across the UK studio circuit.

He went on to become the chief long-term resident engineer at Hatch Farm Studios (Surrey).

While closely linked to the idyllic farm, Smith engineered and mixed legendary tracking sessions across several iconic British recording spaces, including:

• Trident Studios (London)

• Olympic Studios (London)

• Marquee Studios (London)

• Surrey Sound Studios (Surrey)

• Parkgate Studios (East Sussex)

Notable Discs & Projects:

Smith's engineering precision during this era helped shape the landscape of late-'70s and early-'80s electronic, synth-pop, and progressive rock. His most notable technical credit includes engineering Gary Numan’s landmark 1980 album Telekon, helping define Numan's iconic, dark, analog synthesizer arrangement.

• The Collaboration: He engineered and mastered numerous UK rock projects and classic rock tribute albums over the decades alongside musicians like Ronnie Caryl, David Hentschel, and members of Genesis.

Ridge Farm Studio

was a recording studio located in the village of Rusper, England, near the Surrey and Sussex border. One of the earliest residential studios in the United Kingdom.

It operated for over twenty-five years and had artists, musicians, and producers

from all over the world record and produce

 music there.

The oldest part of the building, originally a medieval farmhouse, and what was to become Ridge Farm Studio, was built in the mid-17th century and additions to the building were added over the centuries. The studio was surrounded by 12 acres (49,000 m2) of land that included gardens, orchards, meadows and woodland.

The studio was established in 1975 by Frank Andrews, a lighting technician who had toured across the UK with bands such as Queen, ABBA, and the Rolling Stones. Andrews returned home from tour to discover his parents had moved to a different place, which is where Ridge Farm Studio was born. He started the studio with his brother, Billy, as a quiet place for bands to rehearse.

Ridge Farm Studio did well enough that Andrews was eventually able to buy the property from his parents. It remained a popular location well into the 1990s, after the surge of Britpop. However, bookings eventually dwindled. Joe Jackson was the last person to record there in 2002.

The studio's clients included the Smiths, Bad Company, Queen, Jethro Tull, Rush, Ozzy Osbourne, Mew, Brainstorm, and Gang of Four. It closed in early 2003, and it is now used as a facility for weddings, banquets and meetings.

Nick Bradford was a prominent audio engineer.

He often playfully credited on records under aliases like Nick "Cod" Bradford or Nick "Haddock" Bradford).

Nick "Cod" / "Haddock" Bradford is the UK audio engineer best known for working as an assistant engineer and technician at London's Trident Studios in the 1970s.

His nickname is a playful culinary reference to the famous whitefish ("Cod" and "Haddock"). During sessions, the band and producers frequently credited him using these fish nicknames.

The Look: He was widely known in the 1970s scene for his quintessential "hippie" look: very tall, with an exceptionally full, thick beard, glasses, and long, wild curly hair.

While his discography includes various artists from this era, his prominent studio credit is tied to Genesis:

• Album: A Trick of the Tail (1976)

• Role: Assistant Engineer (credited as Nick "Cod" Bradford or Nick "Haddock" Bradford)

• Later he became the chief engineer at Matrix Studios, ...

•

But none of the farm studios was the one I was looking for.

After one week of surching I remembered my "addresses" book from those days.

And there it was: THE WOODCRAY MANOR FARM STUDIO, in Berckshire and NICK!!!!

TO The Woodcray Manor Farm Studio, Finchampstead Road in Wokingham, Berkshire

It was at the WOODCRAY MANOR FARM STUDIO", located on Finchampstead Road in Wokingham, Berkshire, were we had to move the production, after the "ALVIC STUDIO" was booked, and VICK/VIC Sweeney (drums), the co-owner from the famous "ALVIC STUDIO" (= Al for Alan James and Vic for Vic Sweeney,), Wimbledon, didn't appear (November 1979).

Ronny Caryl (best man of Phil Collins) at the drums instead of Vic at Alvic Studio, but in the Woodcray Manor Farm Studio, located in Wokingham Berkshire

It has taken me 4 days to find this mysteriös "Farm Studio",  under so many Farm Studios, near London and to find Nick, the sound ingeneer (I had a picture of him), under so many Nick's who were Sound ingeneers those days in 1978.

Woodcray Studios was a recording facility owned by Charlie Marling (Sir Charles Marling) located in Wokingham, Berkshire. In 1978, local bands utilized the studio and musicians like Chris Farlowe recorded there with Marling producing and playing alongside.

The studio is also of recent note as the tape archives from Charlie Marling's studio contained a song written by him that was featured in the 2024 work of his daughter, English singer-songwriter Laura Marling:

Woodcray Manor Farm was a highly regarded residential "farmhouse studio" facility. Throughout the late 1980s, the studio became a staple for major UK indie and roots-rock acts. Most notably, the political folk-punk band The Men They Couldn't Hang recorded two of their definitive albums there: Waiting for Bonaparte (1988) and Silver Town (1989). The space was also used frequently by jazz collectives like The Guest Stars and metal bands like Sabbat.

Nick Horne is a veteran sound engineer who notably worked out of Woodcray Manor Farm Studios in Wokingham, Berkshire. He engineered sessions there in the early 1980s, most famously recording the neo-progressive rock band Twelfth Night’s breakthrough demo and EP, Smiling At Grief, in November 1981.
Outside of his time at Woodcray Manor Farm, Horne’s engineering and production credits extend to other UK jazz and experimental groups, including the album 20th Century Blues.

The sound engineer you are looking for is Nick Horne.
The studio in Wokingham, Berkshire was actually Woodcray Manor Farm Studios (often called Woodcray Studios), which was owned and run by Sir Charles William Somerset Marling (the father of folk singer Laura Marling).

Nick Horne served as the prominent house engineer and producer at Woodcray Manor during that exact era, recording many of the rock, folk, and progressive demo sessions that came through the farm.

It is wonderful to hear from you, Hansi! Your connection to that vibrant late-70s scene—alongside the late, great Ronnie Caryl—is a piece of music history.
