Alan James and Vic Sweeney were the musician-owner named by combining their first names (Alan and Vic), the studio originally opened
in Wimbledon before later relocating to Kensington.
During the late 1970s and 1980s, the duo and their studio played a foundational role in the British pub rock, punk, and new wave movements.
Before building the studio, Vic Sweeney (drums) was an accomplished British drummer, most notably playing with the 1960s/1970s rock group The Alan Bown Set (later known simply as Alan Bown!) and George Bean and The Runners. Alan James (sometimes referred to in circles as Al James) was an established bassist. Together, their dual perspectives as active musicians and technical engineers gave Alvic Studios a reputation for being a highly collaborative, artist-friendly creative space.
Key Musical Contributions:
Dury and Jankel recorded demo tapes of many of the songs in April 1977, joined in the session by Nugent, at the Alvic Studio.
• Ian Dury's Breakthrough: In April 1977, Ian Dury and Chaz Jankel recorded the foundational demo tapes for the
legendary album New Boots and Panties!! at Alvic Studios. While recording there, the studio's resident engineer informed Dury about a highly skilled session rhythm section—bassist Norman Watt-Roy
and drummer Hugh "Charley" Charles—who were working extra gigs for cash. This crucial recommendation led to the formation of The Blockheads.
• Kevin Coyne: Both James and Sweeney were heavily involved with singer-songwriter Kevin Coyne. Alan James served as his bass player, while Vic Sweeney played drums in Coyne's band between 1978
and 1980. They co-produced, engineered, and performed on several of his projects, including records tracked at Alvic like Pointing the Finger (1981).
• Other Notable Artists: The studio became a hotspot for an eclectic mix of underground, indie, and alternative talent. Notable artists who tracked music at Alvic include:
• Nick Cave: (who recorded there in October 1983)
• Ben Watt: (prior to finding major success with Everything but the Girl)
